Celebrating Oliver ‘Tuku’ Mtukudzi’s life

Mmatema Moremi and Ringo Madlingozi will headline an evening of tribute performances to the late jazz star Oliver Mtukudzi in the Birchwood Comes Alive Jazz Evening on March 8.

Idols 2015 runner-up Mmatema Moremi and Afro-soul sensation Ringo Madlingozi will headline an evening of tribute performances to the late jazz star Oliver Mtukudzi in the Birchwood Comes Alive Jazz Evening on March 8.

As a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, philanthropist and human rights activist, Mtukudzi’s music advocated for peace, tolerance and the struggles of women and children. During his long career, he released 67 albums, with his last album released just under a year ago at the age of 65.

Mtukudzi’s talent drew many admirers in the industry and fans alike from all corners of Africa, to became the most recognised voice in Zimbabwe, earning international acclaim and touring the UK, US and Canada. He regularly performed at The Birchwood Hotel & OR Tambo Conference Centre and contributed greatly to the success of the monthly jazz evenings over the past 17 years.

In commemoration of his contribution to the industry, actress and Mzansi Christian Award nominee, Mmatema Moremi, and SAMA Award winner Ringo Madlingozi will lead the evening’s performances.

Moremi is the first Idols contestant in history to host a one-woman show at the South African State Theatres 1300 Opera Theatre, while Madlingozi has racked up a number of awards over the years including Best Male Vocalist at the South African Music Awards, as well as Best Male Artist (Southern Africa) and Best Male Vocalist (African Continent) at the Kora awards.

Joining these icons on stage are three local groups; The Levites, Beyond Vocal and Jazzmeloz. The Levites have performed a variety of House, Jazz and Afro-pop for five years, Beyond Vocal are a mix gospel blues, hip hop and Rock, while Jazzmeloz are an upcoming Jazz, House, Soul, R&B and Bantusoul group from Tembisa.

Resident MC Hector Motivator will direct the evening’s entertainment, while comedian Elton Mduduzi, winner of the Best Audience Choice Award at the 2014 Savanna Comedy Choice Awards and the Best Indigenous Comedy Award at the SATMA Awards, will be providing the laughter.

Fans of Oliver Mtukudzi won’t want to miss out on the ultimate celebration of his life with local jazz on Friday, March 8, 2019.
